This Year

So, I watched more movies this year than any other year in my entire life. I still may have been below the national average, but  realized I don't feel like I've ever missed out.  The best movies, I would say, this year where childrenesque movies. With the exception of 500 days of summer, and district nine, they were the only ones I enjoyed. Here are my favorite quotes from this year!

500 days of summer: "Darling. I don't know how to tell you this, but there's a Chinese family in our bathroom." Tom

Monsters v. Aliens:
"Once again, a UFO has landed in America, the only country UFOs ever seem to land in." Reporter

": I don't think your parents like me, and I think that Jello gave me a fake phone number." B.O.B.

"Don't think of it as prison. Think of it as a hotel that you can never leave, 'cause it's locked from the outside." Gen. W.R. Monger

Where the wild things are:

" I'll eat you up I love you so" KW

" Hi, I'm Ira, I put the holes in the trees" I'RA

" Hey guys, I don't have to eat my feet anymore!" Carol

" Let the wild rompus start!" Max

" ...and sleep in a whole pile!" Max

Up!: "I hid under your porch because I love you."  --Russel

Corn, pop, and Jim Bowie.

Last week we flew into the Omaha airport in Nebraska, to drive to DesMoines Iowa. Getting there, we found this hip town center where we ate expensive Italian food. Yum.

It is astounding how much corn there is in Iowa. Absolutely unbelievable. so much. Everywhere. We stayed at host homes the first night and then spent the rest of the time at the retreat with the youth group. There were to be competitions so I joined the blue team, and we dominated until the green team cheated and pulled in front to win the last day of the retreat. hmpf.

Upon getting there, they notified me I would be acting as a counselor for the freshman boys cabin. I didn't sleep much. Catherine Olson came one day and we decided to go eat during my freetime. We googled and found out there was ONE restaurant in the small nearby town of Dayton Iowa. We went and it was closed. We decided to have a picnic and went to their hole in the wall grocery store. Woot. Catherine, bieng the health nut she is, talked me out of oreos and milk and had me get pop tarts and Dr Pepper. She got some Brazilian fruit juice. She also reccomended we get toast snacks. They call Coke pop in Iowa. Whaaat?

The second day we were at camp, they had a group scavenger hunt which I decided to be a part of to help my team. At one point, we had to swim across the lake as a team. In my full clothes I sacrificed my comfort to help the blue team win, to look over my shoulder and see that the leaders weren't watching everyone else who was cheating. I'm not bitter....wait, yes I am. ha. It's alright because later I got to take my frustration out by Blobbing kids into the stratosphere. I didn't get wet, I just did the launching.

We wrapped up our last night at the camp with everyone partying. I went to bed super early...  1 AM. the next day we presented, packed, and headed back to Omaha were we flew to Dallas. While waiting for our connection we ate at Fudruckers in the airport.

Now, we are in San antonio. We went tpo the river walk and Alamo last night. The couple I am staying with work at rival schools. After we are finished with this one, we go to the husbands school and teach them at a retreat. Crazy huh? After theis I get a little over a week break.  At least from traveling. I will still be doing office work.

Last time I was in CO, I got to see Charissa and Trevor from Semester! Ha!

Home, Baking, and did I tell everyone that I am now in love?

So, I have had, for the first time, a 'home' feeling here in Colorado. I have spent my first weekend here and had my first at home family dinner. though Tim was away, Kev and I ate leftovers at the dinner table together. I don't have a bed yet so I have been spending my nights on the Psychedelic couch. You can see it below, but the lighting was terrible so you can't tell the utter brightness of it.

After returning Friday night I spent Saturday hanging with my good friend Davey Talbott at Summit in Manitou Springs. We caught up on each others happenings since we last saw eachother nearly two years ago. It was grand.

Sunday was Beautiful. I went to church, and sat around fully alone and did almost nothing; it was beautiful. Here is a picture of the town house I'm staying in. It is the one to the left. All three stories.

Monday it snowed. Yep. The last day of summer, and there was snow. Not much, but enough to dust the porch.

And I went to goodwill where I didn't find any winter clothes to fit my needs.

Kev and I cleaned the garage so we could pull the cars in to work on them, and so he could set up drums. I put anti freeze in mine today.

Some Mormons came over today and Kevin and I talked to them for hours. We didn't make any progress so they challenged us to a series of competitions. The loser had to accept the others beliefs. We lost at Wii tennis, won egyptian rat screw, lost arm wrestling, badgammon, and won the santa toss. Right now Kev is cage fighting. They have him in a full nelson. Looks like were gonna be Mormons!

Actually, I offered them coffee, we chated, and invited them back. We'll see.

Tonight I baked a chocolate pound cake. Secret recipe of the Mannings (I think). Don't Judge. No haters allowed to view the next picture. The spots are the over flouring I did of the pan.

It tastes good! I swear.

Tim returned tonight and has a freind, his wife, two kids and their dog visiting. Here's how I met the kids.

" Hi. I'm gabe."

" I'm jon jon. how old are you"

"free ( strains to hol up three fingers). Dad says I will be bigger than you when I grow up."

Enter young girl terrorizing a small snouzer.

" Hey"

"hey. I'm Jon jon. Who are you?"

" Kaley. I'm 8 but I reallly look 12."

Fun times to come.

ps. the reference to love is my new found future wife Katie. Katie went to africa for a gap year. She didn't return because she wanted to continue serving the orphans. She now has adopted 13 girls personally to take care of. Not to mention she makes two weekly trips to a village to help with ailments. She plans to start up a garden and I'm going to go over there, find her, fall in love, marry her and make the garden. It was love at first site of the pixels on the screen that reflect her. I can't wait to meet her. Some say it's important to know someones last name before you decide to marry her. But I figure, me being a guy, it doesn't matter because she will change it to mine; and I know that one. For her blog, click >here<

Everything wants to hurt me.

So, after having a mere day in the springs, we headed out to Tucson. There we went to Desert Christian School. The team included David Eaton (without his sidekick Lindsay), Myself, Kevin my roommate, Meghan and her roommate from College Krystan. We went to the school on Tuesday and hung out with the teachers for lunch, and afterwards David and I went out to run errands. There he bought me a new mac book pro to use for the semester. Woot. Before we headed out to camp, we spent two nights in an adobe apt behind one of the students parent's house. 09151814-1

Here is their house.

The next day, we taught a parent meeting to show the parents what we'd be teaching their students at the retreat. They all responded really well. Desert Christian is an amazing School. We went up early with the seniors the night before and set everything up. The seniors served all of the lower class men by getting everything ready, and by welcoming them with signs, songs, and shenanigans when they drove up. The school is divided up into Home rooms so that there is a small group/ community aspect to the school. All classes are mixed together in these groups.

Their annual retreat is wrought with tradition. everyone competes for a coveted trophy, and the freshman boys get initiated. Each freshman is required to carry a hot dog bun with him wherever he goes. If a senoir boy yells bun check, then they have to show them their buns (which are crumbled in a bag). Well, should a boy forget his bun, the poor freshman will have to wear the weiner suit. Like this unfortunate boy.

If I already mentioned this, I will say it's worth mentioning twice. The school is amazing. Every senior is assigned a buddy freshman at the beginning of the year that they take under their wing and meet with regularly. There was hardly any segregation at this school. Everyone (out of 230) knew everyone and no one was to cool to hang out with anyone else. there was no freshman table. The parents and teachers were super involved and there were 30+ parents on the retreat.

Well, the competitions began. After teaching each day they would have small groups, followed by the competitions. An arizona version of curling, to ping pong, to made up games, to the four man push up, to hoola hoops, to ten other weird things, to team building exercise, to this sentence doesn't make sense anymore. I was just saying they played weird games.

The second night to the last, they had a fight night for the senior guys. it was awesome. In cabin Ten. Holla.

The students took the teaching well. The lat night the seniors got to stay up until 2:00 and I stayed up with them playing spoons. I had ZERO letters, and the last guy I was playing had SPOO. Since we had to go, we made the last round winner takes all. We put the spoon on the other side of the cafeteria, and everyone watching put up obstacles in the way. The other guy got four of a kind and took off. I jumped over tables but they had moved the spoon and I didn't notice; I ran to the wrong place.

All the plants in Arizona want to kill you. One plant, has a barbed prong that's poisonous. they have cactus that jump on you, and lizards that shoot blood out of their eye at you. I got back to the springs and spent the Da with Davey Talbot. We talked and had a good time. watched a documentary called the narnia code which is fascinating! everyone should watch it. We head out to Iowa next week.

2,242 Miles.

I don't know why the pictures are so small, forgive me, I haven't used Xanga in a while. So much has changed!
The trip started out with a trek to ATL. I stopped at i360 and saw David and Mary Michael. I went to Alex Smith's house and hung out there with him and Ty. One day we went to this ridiculous place called Jordan's salvage. Basically, at outside thrift store slash junk yard.  We found a sponge bob for mike, and a creepy baby doll.

After that, Ty and I headed to i360 and visited Callaway and the Bulloch house.

I left Ty and headed to New Orleans where I met up with the Axis team. We were the instructers for a Christian School retreat. We hada few days and it was amazing. I had some apprehensions with this next nsemester, but one night after a long conversation with a student I got really excited.

I left the retreat and met with my sister in Dallas and stayed there a night. I got lost on the way there and went into a CFA to get directions and was the 100th customer! free sandwitch for me! I played with My nephew in the morning. He refers to me as his Jon Jon. Ha. We had loads of fun but I had to leave to drive 12 hours to colorado. I got to a gas station and went to check my oil but couldn't open the hood. A guy helped me and I called three people to see if anyone had any idea how to do it. Finally I noticed I was pulling the wrong lever to pop the hood. Underbar.

I then drove 12 hours utterly alone on the most desolate highways in the stormy weather of the century! It was a bit diffacult, but I perservered and didn't die. I think I saw a sasquatch. I finally got here and live in a nice townhouse with two other people. Kevi--my roommate-- and Tim--the owner of the house. They're both cool but tim sleeps during the day. He's a cop.

I went to a small anglican church this morning and ran into David Parker. HA! what a small world. I know this entry isn't very exciting, but I hav e to get ready to leave. We fly to Arizona today.

Here is my trip thus far in pictures. It's morbidly cold here today. Especially leaving the swampy New Orleans where the humidity made me grow gills. I can see my breath here. Woot.
